Online Class - Drawing to Learn - June 2024

We can all draw.

None of us is born “talented” or “not talented.” It is a skill that we learn.

And here’s an interesting fact: our brains love to learn, so much so that the more you push your brain to learn a new skill, the more neural pathways develop. So you get better not only at what you are learning, but at many other mental skills. You get smarter!

I like to say that learning a skill such as drawing is like learning a language. You are not born knowing how to talk. You learn it.

This course is going to teach you the words and grammar you need for the language of drawing, and we are going to use a technique that is proven to work:

We will DRAW TO LEARN, not learn to draw!

This two-day, five-part course Drawing to Lear with Roseann Hanson includes:

Lesson 1 - Study Your Subject

  • Learn how to intensely observe a subject in order to collect the “words” you need for your drawing language.

Lesson 2 - Make Marks

  • Practice those new words by making marks that represent your subject—this is a critical building block in unleashing the power of your drawing language.

Lesson 3 - Find Shapes

  • This exercise is critical for beginning to learn the “grammar” of your subject in order to get the context right.

Lesson 4 - Create Your Study Sketch

  • You will learn how to get proportions right—proportion is like the advanced grammar in this langauge of drawing;

  • You will learn to dip into your Marks to add characteristics to your subject, and check the shapes.

Lesson 5 - Dive into Details

  • Our final lesson brings us back to the study notes in Step 1, coming full circle to finish up our process of Drawing to Learn.

Free Online Workshop - Creative Night Skies

How do you journal night skies? It's always been a love-hate thing for me—I love tracking the stars and planets and finding constellations, but depicting them in journals can be challenging!

In this free online workshop, we will work on four different approaches:

  1. Pre-painted watercolor skies on which you can add sky components live or after a sky-viewing telescope session (a technique inspired by Alaska artist Kristin Link);

  2. Making a cutaway peek-a-boo window showing day-and-night;

  3. Using Sharpies and white, silver, or other metallic pens and pencils; and

  4. Using black paper and white, silver, or other metallic pens, pencils, and paint.

  • For fun if you have them: metallic paints or pens and pencils;

Field Arts Bootcamp Sonoran Desert - NEW session 2

Due to popular demand, we’ve added a second session to the Sonoran Desert bootcamp!

Southern Arizona in spring is magical—and southern Arizona in spring at a private ranch alongside a perennial river and a mythical wilderness is the best ever—and a rare opportunity not to be missed.

This will be four days of pure immersion in field arts: nature journaling, field sketching and watercolor, animal tracking, birdwatching, reading the weather, using field optics, found pigments and inks, and much more.

The setting is a private ranch along Aravaipa Creek about 90 minutes north of Tucson, Arizona. These are ancestral lands of the Apache people, who used the fertile riverside valley for seasonal crops.

Your accommodations are comfortable but not high luxury—think 1970s big ranch house set in a grassy meadow, with a burbling creek running alongside; meals will be included.

New for this bootcamp—a camping option if you have your own vehicle and camp setup; there is a modern bathroom for campers.

We’ll be able to host up to 21 participants because of the camping option, and there will be two instructors—Roseann & Jonathan Hanson.

Inspired by Jonathan Drori’s wonderful books Around the World in 80 Trees and Around the World Plants, we’re going to travel around the globe by region and sketch interesting, weird, iconic, or beautiful trees and tree-like plants.

No. 4: Europe

What you’ll need: a multi-media sketchbook or a strip map (see the version I did for North America, link below), pen and / or pencil for our base drawings, and then watercolor or colored pencil to quickly bring them to life.

TIP: I used a strip of heavy watercolor paper folded into four squares to create an “accordion” booklet to record my trees (8 total, 4 on each side).

Prepwork: have on hand a simple outline map of Europe so you can sketch location points for each species.

Field Arts Skills Workshop: Ancient Ochres [FREE online]

Human use of pigments to express ourselves may be—literally—a watershed moment in evolutionary time. Perhaps among the first to be used were iron oxides (ochres) such as at France’s famous Lascaux. Archaeologist Tammy Hodgskiss wrote: “People may say ochre is the earliest form of art and symbolism, but there’s more to it. Ochre shows how our brains were developing, and that we were using our environment. It bridges the divide between art and science.”

In this deep dive into the science of artistic pigments and look at our earliest history as artists, we will also learn to create beautiful images in our field notebooks and nature journals using natural earth pigments such as ochres (yellow, red, purple), manganese, lapis lazuli, graphite, and more.

Fearless Watercolor for Field Sketching (October 23 – 24, 2021)

Adding watercolor to your field notebooks and nature journals need not be an elaborate and frustrating exercise in juggling dozens of colors and brushes.

Naturalist and field sketch artist Roseann Hanson will introduce you to the simple technique of mixing any color you need from a triad—three primary colors (a cyan, a magenta, and a yellow) —plus her own preferred “bonus” colors of burnt sienna and a dark blue.

It’s not hard, and it’s fast, simple, and fun—guaranteed to change your approach to adding color to your field sketches and free you from the tyranny of complexity and frustration.

You may use your own paints (we will supply a list of recommendations) or order a complete Minimalist Paint Kit (mini paint kit and palette, waterbrush, rag, clip, and mini spray bottle) or a mini paint tin with sample paints, and paint along.

Join me for a fun online workshop celebrating the art of elegant ink in our sketchbooks. While I do love color in my journal, I also love the beauty of well-wrought pen sketches.

We’ll cover types of pens and inks (from ballpoint to fountain pens, including the pluses and minuses of the types); practice mark-making and values; and work on a couple of different types of sketches using one image to create each, so we can see how different styles of linework each produce a different “feel” on your pages.

Skyscapitos Appreciation Society – First online meetup!

Inspired by and in collaboration with Journaling with Nature’s Bethan Burton, we’re launching our own informal “Skyscapito Appreciation Society!” A “skyscapito” is a small skyscape we create in our nature journals, similar to the “little landscapes” (landscapitos) John Muir Laws loves to create.

Join me (Roseann Hanson, of the Field Arts Institute), Bethan, and Deborah Conn as we host an hour (or a little more, if needed) of sharing our skyscapitos and our favorite colors for sky-making.

We will be doing this semi-regularly so we can all get better at this difficult subject!

This will be interactive, not a lecture: we will each bring one or two skyscapitos from our journals and share with you what paints we used, and how we went about the process.

We would like you to do the same — you don’t HAVE to but we would greatly encourage you to!

I’ll be teaching an introduction to nature journaling (see October 23-35).

Join professional illustrator Bill Singleton in his popular introduction to natural history illustration using gouache, water-soluble paint that is opaque. 

For hundreds of years gouache has been the main tool that natural science illustrators choose for botanical subjects because of its versatility and “editability.” 

Bill will demonstrate gouache using both white or toned paper, compare transparent watercolor and gouache, and teach rendering techniques unique to this interesting and classic illustration medium.

Harness your inner botanical illustrator as we venture virtually out into the hills and arroyos of Tumamoc to learn how to paint with gouache.

Format:

Learn the art of sketching our desert reptiles while studying their physiology and natural history. 

John Muir "Jack" Laws is one of the world's most widely known teachers of nature journaling. His approach emphasizes the growth mindset—that anyone can learn to draw and sketch in their field notebooks and journals—while he imparts not only sketching tips and tools but also an infectious joy in nature and its creatures.

We'll host a video stream of live reptiles with Tumamoc's Robert Villa, who is also president of the Tucson Herpetological Society. Beto will introduce you to a rosy boa, a desert tortoise, and a Gila monster who will model while you learn to sketch.

In this workshop, Tucson artist Saraiya Kanning will teach you the foundational principles for ink drawing, including how to create the illusion of light and dark using various mark-making. You'll also learn the fun trick of playing with ink washes by using water-soluble pen and a brush. 

The saguaro-studded hills of Tumamoc will lend  inspiration for your drawings.

Join me for an online live and interactive introduction to nature journaling, hosted by the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill.

Neither science education nor art training is needed—you will develop the skills of a naturalist and a field sketch-artist along the way.

In this online class we will learn how to practice “intentional curiosity” as the core of nature journaling: to ask questions, to dig deeper, to focus our minds both intently and intentionally.  

Instructor Roseann Hanson, who has been keeping a nature journal for more than 30 years, will be your guide on the journey to becoming a naturalist, nature journalist, and artist. 

The class will include:

  • The nuts-and-bolts of journal-keeping (paper and ink types, archival systems, how to make entries that you can refer to later, laying out pages, prompts to jump-start observations, and tips on researching science questions sparked by your observations).

  • Easy tips that enable anyone to get started sketching and painting. 

  • Tricks to free you from your inner critic and start sketching and painting. Art in a nature journal is not only lovely to see, but an important component of your skillset because the very act of drawing and painting something from life involves incredibly intense observation. Your brain is wholly occupied by only that thing you are observing and drawing—it is a kind of meditation that results in new insights, deeper understanding, and even reverence and gratitude.

Join me and the Natural History Institute for a 2 1/2-day workshop exploring nature through field journals—all live online, including unique virtual field trips and your own field experiences.

Keeping a nature journal or field journal can both deepen your connections to the natural world and help you learn more about it. Neither science education nor art training is needed—you will develop the skills of a naturalist and a field sketch-artist along the way.

This 3-session class will introduce the tools and processes of keeping a nature journal, with instructor Roseann Hanson. There will be an optional 1-hour check-in the following Saturday as well. Sessions will be recorded, for review and if you miss a day.

Virtual Field Trip — Botswana — Field Notes & Journaling Workshop - July 25 2020 (free)

Join me as we head to Botswana for a special virtual safari! We’ll explore, sketch, and take notes on elephants and their behavior, all virtually. If you haven't started adding sketches to your field journals yet, don't worry—this session is going to focus on observational skills and recording data in the field. I might do a sketch or two, but definitely demonstrate survey counts and behavior tallies. Or just sit back and enjoy watching elephant antics.

If you’re shy, don’t worry—we don’t require anyone to share their work and you can remain completely anonymous and worry-free!
